Wine and Cheese Pairing Blog Report 1
Here is a blog over a wine and cheese pairing I did with some friends! We had three different wines and cheeses, we paired each wine with each cheese and these are my notes and pictures from the fun experience!
The Wines:
Wine Number 1
Name: Vino Pinot Grigio
Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio
Region: Washington State
Country: US
Year: 2014
Price: $8.00 per glass
My review: I liked this wine, it had a light body with a refreshing after taste. There was a little acidic kick to it, but nothing major. It was an easy to drink white wine with floral aromas on the nose.
Wine Number 2
Name: Luccio Moscato D'Asti
Variety: 100% Moscato
Region: Piedmont
Country: Italy
Year: 2016
Price: $6.00 per glass
My review: This was a classic sweet Moscato. It was a little syrupy, but was still light enough on the palate to be enjoyable. It had strong aromas of floral and fruit. Overall it was a fresh and sweet Moscato with a fun bubble/fizz to it.
Wine Number 3
Name: Honig Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Napa Valley
Country: US
Year: 2016
Price: $9.00 per glass
My review: My friends didn't like this one, they thought it was too acidic, but I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a nice contrast to the other two wines, which were more on the sweeter side. This was a brisk and refreshing glass of Sauvignon Blanc with a light body that almost floated in your mouth. It had just enough sweetness to it that it perfectly balanced out the acidity.
The Cheeses:
Cheese Number 1
Name: Smoky Park Gouda
My review: When they named this cheese they were not kidding about the smoky aspect. This was a very smoky, almost charcoaled, cheese. I wasn't really a fan of it, but it had a strong taste which worked well with the wine pairings as I could really tell how the wine affected it.
Cheese Number 2
Name: Black Creek Extra Sharp White Cheddar
My review: I really liked this cheese. It had a sharp kick to it, but also had a lovely creamy aftertaste that made well for blending. It was a classic white cheddar, nothing too special.
Cheese Number 3
Name: Great Midwest Cranberry Cheddar
My review: We picked this a our third cheese as we wanted to see how a fruity infused cheese would pair with the white wines. I love the taste of cranberries and thought they went well with the classic cheddar taste.
Vino Pinot Grigio Pairing Results:
Cheese: Black Creek Extra Sharp White Cheddar (as seen in photo to the left)
Pairing results: The overall verdict on this pairing was good! The sharpness of the white cheddar complimented the acidic kick the Pinot Grigio had.
Cheese: Smoky Park Gouda
Pairing results: Everyone hated this pairing, the smokiness of the cheese did not pair well with the acidic components of the Pinot Grigio. The gouda almost made the wine taste sour.
Cheese: Great Midwest Cranberry Cheddar
Pairing results: This was also not the best pairing. The sweetness of the cranberry cheddar did not go with the acidic components of the Pinot Grigio at all. The cheese went from tasting like a great mix of cranberries and cheddar to moldy/off.
Luccio Moscato D'Asti Pairing Results:
Cheese: Great Midwest Cranberry Cheddar (as seen in photo to the left)
Pairing results: The cranberry cheddar went really well with the sweet Moscato. The richness of the Moscato complimented the sweetness the cranberries brought to the creamy cheddar. We all liked this pairing!
Cheese: Smoky Park Gouda
Pairing Results: This pairing did not go down well. The smokiness of the gouda left a weird and repulsive taste in the mouth when mixed with the Moscato. Smoky and sweet did not gel well at all!
Cheese: Black Creek Extra Sharp White Cheddar
Pairing Results: The sharp white cheddar and the Moscaot mix was kind of an indifferent experience. The sharpness of the cheese almost completely neutralized the sweetness of the Moscato completely. Leaving the mouth feeling overall underwhelmed in my opinion.
Honig Sauvignon Blanc Pairing Results:
Cheese: Black Creek Extra Sharp White Cheddar (as seen in the picture to the left)
Pairing results: Don't let the smile/laugh fool you, I had no idea how bad this was going to taste! The cheese left a tarty taste in the mouth when it mixed with the Sauvignon Blanc. The sharp cheddar made the once beautifully tasting Sauvignon Blanc taste dry and acidic.
Cheese: Great Midwest Cranberry Cheddar
Pairing results: The cranberry cheddar did not go well with the Sauvignon Blanc. The cranberry aspect of the cheese was too sweet in comparison to the acidness of the wine, leaving your palate dry and sour.
Cheese: Smoky Park Gouda
Pairing results: This was probably the best cheese pairing with the Sauvignon Blanc, although it wasn't perfect, it was not as bad as the other two cheeses. The smokiness of the gouda added to the acidic/dry aspect of the wine, which overall filled the body of the wine out.
So there you have it, three different wines paired with three different cheeses amongst friends! My favorite pairing was the Luccio Moscato D'Asti and the Great Midwest Cranberry Cheddar, I just can't get away from my sweet taste buds!

| Please note that we had to cut up and take our own cheese to the restaurant, as we forgot Oklahoma has a super lame law that prohibits buying alcohol on a Sunday. :) |
